When I was younger I never wore dresses. Even at work I went for trousers, leggings and briefly in the 80's favoured jersey jump-suits. Yes really. Luckily there don't seem to be any photos of me from that era...
Lately though I have found myself more and more drawn to dresses and skirts - my inner girly is fighting to get out and in my head I'm channelling the Timotei girl - all swishing long blonde locks and swirling skirts. OK yes I look more like the Timotei girl would after years of scoffing doughnuts but still I imagine in some way I look feminine and soft in a frock.
So when I was offered the chance to choose something from Bonmarche's new collection I went straight to the dresses and was delighted to find a lovely selection of dresses in a variety of colours, fabrics and styles.
Now you don't need reminding that I have had seven children. My figure, let's say, is not what it was. I mean I'm not obese but my stomach is not exactly a washboard so I chose a dress with a pleated front and a busy pattern to make me feel less self-conscious.
The dress is from the David Emanuel collection and is described on the website like this: "Our ever popular knot front maxi dress is now available in this statement floral print. Made from a good stretch jersey for added comfort, this dress comes complete with a top half lining over the bust for added support."
What I particularly liked is that the dress is available in two lengths. The standard length is 124.5cm (49in) for a size 10 from side neck to hem + 1 cm for each additional size. The longer length is 129.5cm (60in)
I chose the standard length - I'm 5ft 3ins and it came to mid calf on me which I really liked as I normally trip up wearing maxi-dresses.
The lining in the top half of the dress gives it a really luxurious feel - I have to say slipping this dress on was real pleasure as you really could feel the quality. It felt nice so in turn I felt like I looked nice.
I wore it to a friend's dinner party, teamed with a black shrug, black tights and black suede shoes with a mid-height heel. I'm also planning to wear it on my holidays in Cyprus where I think it will be perfect for a night out at the Taverna!
My dress costs £29.99 from BonmarchĂ© and you can click here to go straight to the page it features on. Or click here to see all the new arrivals at BonmarchĂ© including clothing, shoes, accessories, plus size and designs by David Emanuel.
