I love seafood. Many of my friends find this surprising as I am quite a fussy eater but for some reason I don't freak out at the sight of tentacles on my plate.
My 16 year old son shares my love of anything which dwells in the sea (and fish in general) and so during our holiday in Cyprus we knew we had to visit one of our favourite restaurants, Ocean Basket, which has a number of venues on the island.
It seems a bit wrong as the chain is actually South African not Cypriot but while I generally support smaller independent restaurants and tavernas when I visit my mum who lives in Cyprus, the food is so good at Ocean Basket I can't resist.
On this occasion we visited the Paphos branch at the Avanti Holiday Village Piazza, Poseidon Avenue, Kato Paphos although I noticed signs declaring that a new restaurant has just opened in Coral Bay. There are also Ocean Basket sites in Nicosia, Limassol and Ayia Napa.
We were offered the opportunity to eat inside (air conditioned) or out - we chose to be outside which had lots of shade and efficient fans which was perfect in the humidity Cyprus is currently experiencing. (unusually)
The menu is quite large and obviously features a lot of fish and seafood as well as sushi. You can choose basic battered cod and chips or do like I do and opt for one other many platters featuring a variety of seafood.
This week I shared their platter for 2 with my mum which contained mussels in a creamy garlic sauce, calamari and calamari heads, prince prawns (butterflied for easy access) and "catch of the day" which was a tender tasty white fish.
My son had a platter to himself - he couldn't quite believe how much food he had on it!
My husband chose calamari three ways -grilled, fried and cajun style. My dad went for the traditional fish and chips.
We were offered rice, chips or "half and half" and they also offer garden salad as an option. We shared bread with dips of chopped garlic, chilli and a tangy sauce which is brought with the menus to nibble while you choose your meal.
Staff were helpful and friendly and spoke excellent English. The restaurant is very family friendly.
Portions are generous and the platters offer particularly good value for money. The platter for two for example cost 26 Euros. I think 13 Euros per person is not bad considering the amount and quality of the food on the platter.
So if you are planning a holiday in Cyprus and love seafood too, make sure you plan a visit to Ocean Basket - this was our fourth time going there and it has been excellent every time.
Disclaimer: This is NOT a sponsored post. I just wanted to write about my lovely meal.
