As if the usual festive madness wasn't enough, my poor teenaged daughter is slap bang in the middle of her mock GCSEs and was starting to look positively ghost-like.
In between revising and continuing with the intensive curriculum at school she has done a sleep out for homeless charities and of course as a normal 16-year-old enjoys a fair bit of socialising as well.
She eats relatively healthily but is a grazer and as a pale skinned blonde I started to worry as she became almost translucent and complained of feeling tired even after 9 hours sleep!
Luckily we had been sent some liquid iron to try- a food supplement called Blueiron made with Nordic blueberries promising Nordic vitality.
The packaging states that the liquid had a great taste and was gentle on the stomach and added that iron contributes to a reduction in tiredness and fatigue so I thought I would offer some to my girly to see if might help.
Well I'll be honest with you. She doesn't agree with the "great taste" statement. The liquid is brownish and she says it tastes horrid. In the interests of research I took a spoonful. I actually think it's fine, in fact more than fine, it's really quite nice. It's sweet and I think tastes like a mild blueberry cordial. It certainly tastes nicer to me than other similar products we have tried previously. But I am reporting her opinion to be fair.
Luckily she has been so impressed by the way it makes her feel that not only is she happy to take it, she actually asks for it every day.
We have watched her skin tone improve from ghostly grey to healthy pink and she claims she can feel an improvement in her energy levels within a short time of taking her daily 10ml dose. She has not suffered any of the frequent digestive side effects of iron (like constipation, diarrhoea and stomach irritation) so we take it that the statement about being gentle on the stomach is accurate too.
So. Blueiron gets a big thumbs up from us. Here's a bit more information about the product.
Blueiron is the only iron supplement containing Nordic blueberries and mineral water offering a source of natural antioxidants. It has a patented micro-encapsulated iron delivery system making it gentle on the stomach.
Blueiron aims to contribute to a healthy immune system and a reduction of tiredness and fatigue. As well as iron it contains Vitamin E, C B12, Folic Acid, Biotin and Zinc.
It's manufactured in Finland and distributed by Blackrock Pharmaceuticals. It's free from artificial colours (hence the brown tinge!), is lactose free and is suitable for children aged 3 years and over, vegetarians and during pregnancy. The packaging states it has no gluten-containing ingredients.
You can find out more about Blueiron and where to buy it on the Blueiron website. You can buy it directly from the website at £14.99 (with free delivery) for a 330ml bottle which, once opened, you can keep refrigerated and use over 2 months.
Obviously the product is meant to supplement a healthy varied diet so don't think you can consume nothing but mince pies and this and still feel great.
I have to say I have been very impressed with its positive impact on my daughter's health and energy levels and will definitely be keeping a bottle on standby ready for the real GCSE's in the spring. I think it might just get me through the next hectic few weeks too.
Disclaimer: I was sent a bottle of Blueiron free for the purpose of this honest review.
