SNOWDAY! My children were delighted to discover the primary and secondary school AND my daughter's college campus were closed due to the Beast From The East and we could plan a day of snow fun made even more exciting with a hot chocolate challenge.
It was slightly odd snow, not great for making snowmen but they still had fun making snow angels and generally chucking snow at each other until their fingers and toes went numb.
Nothing is more warming than a lovely hot chocolate and as part of my panic buying earlier in the week, along with 20 loaves of bread and 100 gallons of milk, I had bought hot chocolate, mini marshmallows and squirty cream.
Back in the house after a warm shower and all PJ'd up, I challenged my children to incorporate any of these ingredients plus gorgeous chocolatey and creamy wonder-filled Oreos into a hot chocolate recipe.
Their quest? To find the perfect way to eat Oreos with hot chocolate. I allocated two Oreos each - the perfect serving size for a family snack.
My youngest daughter (aged 11) utilised my pestle and mortar to crush an Oreo. We found this was a good way to increase the coverage - just one Oreo crumbled was perfect for two cream topped mugs of hot chocolate! She saved her second Oreo for an after tea treat.
My other daughter (aged 17) who is studying science devised an experiment to see if the density of the cream was enough to support the weight of an Oreo.
It was! Well briefly anyway. It might have sunk after a while but hers didn't stay in the cream for long anyway as she discovered a whole Oreo made the perfect tool to scoop up the delicious cream topping. Her other cookie was dunked in the remaining hot chocolate.
My 13 year old son decided to go old school and demonstrated what he thought was the best way to eat Oreos - without hot chocolate at all!
We had so much fun making our hot chocolate treats. It was a perfect family activity on such a cold and snowy day.
