I LOVE a roast dinner. If I had to choose my last meal on death row it would almost certainly be a roast dinner complete with roast potatoes, gravy and piles of meat.
I was very excited to be invited to Sunday lunch at roast, the restaurant in the heart of London's famous foodie destination, Borough Market.
Window tables have a great view of the market and the menu showcases delicious British food so of course you would expect the roast dinner to be like the ones you remember your Granny making.
I started with the Chorizo Scotch Egg with piccalilli which I confess I have had before. The piccalilli is awesome which makes it worth ordering that dish for that alone- tangy and tasty.
Then I went for the roast beef complete with a giant Yorkshire pudding which was served with a gravy made from boiled beef bones and red wine.
The beef was served medium rare as requested and the two slices were enormous!
Cabbage, carrots and deliciously crispy rosemary roast potatoes were served in bowls separately to share between me and my companion, May from EatCookExplore.
Portions are generous and I have to say a lesser woman might not have managed it. However I consider myself a professional and with a slight breather, managed to eat all of the meat and had two helpings of the vegetables. The Yorkshire pudding beat me though.
Despite this, I obviously had room for dessert. I ordered the gluten free sticky date sponge with toffee sauce, almond brittle and clotted cream.
This was possibly the sweetest pudding I have every eaten - I described it to my friend as a diabetic coma in a dish - but we both agreed it was divine and most definitely the highlight of the meal.
I devoured the lot and waddled home feeling like I may never eat again.
Roast seems to be popular in the week mostly with people with business expense accounts and clients to please (lots of people in workwear) and at the weekend with people celebrating occasions or wanting generous portions in a nice environment (lots of people in nice blouses and smart casual wear plus lots of people carrying/receiving cards and gifts).
Book in advance to guarantee a table, especially at peak times.
