Everyone wants the best for their child and whatever your own level of education you always hope your offspring will at least match it if not exceed it. But sometimes life gets in the way and children from low income families in particular can face a tough road to get qualified.
In California an exciting project has been making a real difference for young learners from all backgrounds ensuring that even disadvantaged children have the best start in life possible and the opportunity to make a better life for themselves through education.
The founders of Rocketship Public Schools believe in the infinite possibility of human potential. They believe that every student deserves the right to dream, to discover, and to develop their unique potential.
Their non-profit network of public elementary charter schools propels student achievement, develops exceptional educators, and partners with parents who enable high-quality public schools to thrive in their community.
Rocketship education values are based on three pillars.
The idea behind Rocketship is simple but effective. To educate the whole child.
The founders and staff pride themselves on creating schools that promote core values of persistence, empathy, responsibility, and respect. They also supplement their core instruction in Humanities and STEM with social emotional learning and positive behavior interventions and supports.
All of the schools offer a diverse array of enrichment classes, selected in partnership with parents, such as art, nutrition, gardening, music, dance, and more. Delivering a well-rounded education builds the critical thinking, team work, character skills and values that so-called Rocketeers need to thrive in school and life.
Rocketship schools are community schools. Across all of the schools, families are deeply engaged in their student’s academic life and the school community. Parents name the schools, help design the enrichment offering, and select the school’s unique fifth core value.
Then, every autumn (fall) teachers and leaders visit the home of every student to learn more about their family, life, and experiences outside of school. By changing the dynamic from parent in a teacher’s classroom, to teacher in a parent’s house Rocketship staff members are able to develop much deeper ties with parents that carries through the school year and beyond.
Currently you can find Rocketship schools in the Bay area, Nashville, Milwaukee and Washington DC and already results are proving their system works.
Rocketship has come a long way since opening their first school in a church in San Jose serving over 8000 students in the 2017-18 school year. Keep an eye on Rocketship as their are shooting for the stars.
