Dairy, Gluten & Nut-free Rocky Road Bars from Mummy Meagz

Day four in the Big Brother  Madmother house. The conservatory is now a classroom, my husband has gone from lowly invisible supermarket worker to superhero and I am desperately channelling my inner Mary Poppins.

Imagine my delight then when a care package of truly scrumptious dairy, wheat and nut free, vegan friendly Mummy Meagz Rocky Road bars were delivered (cautiously and contact free) yesterday by my postman. (AD)

The Mummy Meagz brand was founded by mother and daughter duo, Meagan and Willow Boyle. In 2003, the two founded created a cafe, called Blondes, in the village of Cottingham in the East Riding of Yorkshire. In 2016, they took the brave step of turning it vegan, and the business has blossomed. However, this hasn’t been the pair’s only success.

Despite Meagan being 72, she’s found herself at the centre of a vegan food revolution. As Meagan began to cook up sweet treats for the cafe, they flew off the counter!

She began to sell her vegan creme eggs - known as Chuckie Eggs - online under the Mummy Meagz brand, and in the last few weeks, went onsite at Holland and Barrett. Before the current covid-19 lockdown the Chuckie Eggs were selling at a rate of one every 30 seconds, as Meagan gives vegans a taste of the food they really want - not bland, boring ’sticks and leaves’!

Supported by the business know-how and organisations skills of Willow, Mummy Meagz is now taking more of the world’s favourite snacks and turning them vegan, including the classic Rocky Road treat.

Meagan Boyle, co-founder of Mummy Meagz, says: “Rocky Road bars are loved all around the world. But sadly the inclusion of nuts, standard marshmallows – which often contain gelatine – and dairy based chocolate means they cannot be enjoyed by everyone.

I’m changing that with our range of delicious Rocky Road bars, each crafted to a recipe that means even more people can delight in them regardless of dietary requirements or preference."

My main issue with the bars which come in a a selection of mouth-watering varieties was which one to eat first -original, orange, sea salt and cinder toffee or minty?

Anyone who knows me knows I am a sucker for anything which includes sea salt. My two daughters were also very keen to try this flavour.  Reader, I confess I made them share a bar as these treats are so gorgeous I didn't really want to give any away.

I try to avoid dairy as it really doesn't agree with me so it was wonderful to be able to enjoy a chocolate treat without fear of gastric repercussions.

I swear you would not know this was a "free from" product as unlike many, this is definitely not "fun free" (phrase coined by my friend Kat who has to adhere to multiple dietary restrictions.)

I really love the minty flavour which has enough mint to be minty but does not overwhelm. The marshmallows are plentiful and tasty and I very much appreciate the lack of nuts. I also appreciate the lack of fruit and laughed out loud at the packaging which states:"Free From 13 major allergens; oh and fruit, because who wants fruit  in Rocky Road?" Indeed!

Each variant in the Rocky Road range is approved by the Vegan Society, and is gluten-free. Because Mummy Meagz believes treats only taste good if they do good, all products in the range are free of Genetically Modified ingredients (GMOs) and contain only palm oil considered sustainable by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).

The bars are wrapped in Mummy Meagz’s iconic bright stripy packaging. Each bar weighs 55g and has a recommended retail price (RRP) of £1.49, meaning chocolate-lovers of all budgets can give themselves the treat they deserve.

There are lots of store-based stockists but the good news right now is that you can order them online. Why not order some for an isolated friend or family member - I can't tell you how wonderful it was to receive a chocolate treat-filled package yesterday.

Disclaimer: I received a selection of of Mummy Meagz Rocky Road bars free for the purpose of this honest review.
