Preparing your car for the winter weather is important because if it’s not prepared properly, then you’re putting your vehicle at risk of damage.

Check your car’s fluid

Your car’s fluids are something to be mindful of when it comes to preparing your car for the winter. In order for your car to function properly, fluids are required to lubricate the parts of the car like the engine for example.

Check all of the areas of the car where fluid is needed and ensure they’re topped up to the right level. For example, check your windscreen solution is filled up, as your coolant and engine oil are.

If you neglect to fill up the car’s fluids then this can often cause breakdowns and regular problems with the car’s performance. You can find most fluids and car accessories needed for your car online.

Do a visual and physical check of the tyres

A visual and physical check of the tyres is a good way to help ensure you’re not driving on the road with a flat tyre or one that needs pumping up. This can be helpful because if you don’t check the tyres before driving for a long period of time, you might end up in a spot of trouble if you suddenly run a flat tyre.

Check the tyres closely and use your thumb to push into the tyre to ensure it’s not too firm or too slack.

Check the windshield for any cracks

Your windshield should be free of cracks, otherwise, the windshield might be compromised and therefore be a danger to you and your passengers.

There may be small cracks that are small enough that be covered with a special sealant, so it’s worth checking with your local windscreen repair service to see what’s required.

Make sure all your lights work

All your car’s lights should be working and functioning correctly. It’s a good idea to take a look at your lights ideally with someone assisting you so that you know they all work correctly. If there are any lights that don’t work properly, you’ll need to get this seen too immediately.

Have a de-icer available in the car

A de-icer is useful to have, especially during the colder months of the year. You’ll likely need to de-ice the car at some point, especially if you’ve left the car idle for a certain amount of time already.

It’s easy enough to de-ice the car but having the right tools can certainly help, rather than needing to use a credit card for example!

Preparing your car for winter weather is important not only for the benefit of the car but to help keep you and your passengers safe too. Make sure to have these tips available to you when winter rolls around.
