I did not take much convincing to attend what was initially rather vaguely billed as a tasting session of authentic Greek street food. When I found out the tasting was of the gloriously authentic and hugely affordable menu at EPIC in the huge Westfield Stratford City mall I was over the moon as I am already a huge fan of this eatery.
I first discovered EPIC when I was looking for something to eat before going to the ABBA Voyage experience a few years ago. Conveniently located for the specially built ABBA arena, (as well as West Ham FC's stadium, the Copper Box Arena, The ArcelorMittal Orbit and lots more) there are of course lots of options for food at Westfield Stratford City but I think you'd be hard pressed to beat the quality of food at EPIC for the price.
We love Greek food - simple yet delicious souvlaki, halloumi, Greek salads with crumbly feta dressed with gorgeous olive oil and oregano of course and EPIC manages to recreate the holiday food experience even within a bustling mall.
I was amazed to learn that EPIC import all their food from Greece to ensure a truly authentic flavour - even the pork and chicken gyros which are a million miles from the greasy options which often end up as pavement art after a boozy night out. The flavours are outstanding. I swear you can taste the sunshine in the mountain-grown oregano they import.
Because the lovely people who own and run EPIC are Greek of course the "tasting" menu was in fact a huge tray featuring most of their freshly-made dishes.
My mouth is watering now as I recall crispy skin-on baby roast potatoes, creamy fresh Tzatziki, oregano-dusted Pita, delicate yet flavoursome chicken and pork gyros, roasted peppers, colourful crisp salad with a generous slice of feta nestling among vibrant tomatoes, olives, peppers and sweet red onion, and their hugely popular "two hands needed" wrap.
The only things I didn't manage to eat were the salad which I saved as I knew my daughter would kill for it, and the wrap which was devoured by the same daughter before we even got onto the motorway heading home.
EPIC sits in the main food court in the mall where it has been tempting visitors away from far less interesting options since Westfield Stratford City opened in 2011. The prices are not much more than a meal from the Golden Arches and you can choose from pita wraps, burgers, platters and salads with lots of options to customise your meal. There are plenty of options for those who don't eat meat too like the mushroom and halloumi burger with red pepper veganaise, vegan mushroom souvlaki or veggie grill.
There's a huge seating area which is shared by all the eateries in the food court and it can get busy. My top tip would be to time your meal out of the usual mealtime rush hours. EPIC is open from 10.30am-9.30pm Monday to Saturday and 10.30-6.30pm on Sundays so there's plenty of time to make sure you don't miss out on this foodie treat.
Fancy it? I have a £15 gift voucher up for grabs so you can go and enjoy authentic Greek flavours without needing a passport. Head to my Instagram account to enter!
